Have you ever watched an infomercial and noted the many folks that come on and give broadband prices about what a great product it is and how it has helped them lose weight, make compare wireless broadband or changed their life forever? Well, we all know a good many of those testimonial-type statements are utter non-sense, most likely these are paid actors, that answered "cattle calls" or classified ads for modeling or acting gigs.
Indeed, it doesn't surprise anyone that these "shrills" are helping the company in question misrepresent the products, and/or service and thus, mislead consumers. We all know or should know that this is against the law. The Federal Trade Commission, aka FTC (a little division of the Justice Department) is now internet test into making rules that will prevent false testimonials on blogs and online on Internet selling websites.
This leads to a big problem and therefore, I guess my question is; "If such rules were passed, how on Earth could the FTC enforce it?" The agency would have to quadruple its consumer protection division and still they could only go after 1-2% of the problem out there. There are hundreds of thousands of testimonials added to blogs daily, who knows maybe a million, and that's only US Based Internet Bloggers.
We all know there is a good bit of fraud online and yet the Internet is World Wide, so how can the FTC enforce the entire world of Bloggers and Online Marketers, many of whom are falsely promoting junk, business opportunities, and trinkets on the Internet. Think on this.
